A full day pen and wash workshop at Ilkley Studios, organised by me.

When

24 October 2026
10:00 am - 3:30 pm

I’m delighted to announce the resumption of my own pen and wash workshops in the iconic Yorkshire town of Ilkley, after far too long a gap.

The workshop:

The day will consist of a demonstration by me (in stages), after each of which you will have a go at implementing the techniques I’ve just shown. Depending on the working pace with which you’re comfortable, there will also be the opportunity to start( or even complete) a second piece: the inspiration for your work will be from a selection of reference photos that I’ll supply.

You’ll just need your usual painting gear: watercolours; brushes larger brushes(size 8 and above) will be best for loose expressive washes; a soft pencil (2B is perfect); a fineline pen with waterproof ink ( this is intrinsic to my working process, but don’t fret if you can’t easily get hold of one….I’ll have some with me for purchase on the day.

The last item that you’ll need is some good quality watercolour paper – at least 300 g, and in either cold press or roof finish: hot press paper just won’t give you the effects I’ll be demonstrating. Again, don’t worry if you’re not able to get this -again, I’ll have some Saunders Waterford 300g to buy.

Good quality watercolour paper in loose sheets, pads or blocks. My  favoured brand is Saunders Waterford 300g rough in a quarter imperial size (approx. 15” x 11”) but any equivalent good quality paper will do. The paper we choose to paint on is the foundation of our work—and like a house, a good foundation is critical for the success of a painting: good quality paper is of great importance, especially for the beginner who is learning.

The Venue:

Situated slap bang in the centre of Ilkley, Ilkley Art Studios occupies a lovely stone cottage in the grounds of the Manor House. There’s no parking at the venue, but there is a large car park less than five minutes’ level walk away.

Alternatively, the bus and train station is just over 10 minutes’ walk, if you prefer to use public transport.

 The cost:

The full day is £65 per person, to include tea (Yorkshire of course), coffee and snacks, but not lunch. There are a good number of cafes and takeaway shops within easy walking distance, and you’re very welcome to bring your own food.

The dates:

The workshop will run on Saturday May 16  and 24 October- the workshop content will vary for each of the two dates, although the underlying techniques remain the same.

To book:

Just send me an email  john@drawninyorkshire.com ( or simply click the ‘get in touch’ link at the top right of this page) with your full details, saying which of the dates you’d like to book and I’ll reply with payment details.
