John will supp ly the reference image for the main painting\, but you're more than welcom e to bring your own if you have a particular favourite image: there will a lso be a good range of alternative photos to choose from- who knows\, you might create the image for this year's Christmas card?\nAbout the Artist\n John Harrison - Yorkshire born and bred - and proud of it.\n\nJohn produce s drawings and then adds colour in watercolour washes\, not too dissimilar to a traditional painter. He will often start with a pencil drawing\, add watercolour washes and then add ink lines over the top\, but he usually s tarts with a line drawing in ink\, or more often\, a sketch.\n\nHe is an a ctive Urban Sketcher - meeting up with other artists at a wide variety of locations to ‘show the world\, one drawing at a time’ (a direct quote from the Urban Sketchers’ website).\n\nThe inspiration for much of his w ork is to be found within Yorkshire’s borders\, and running a close seco nd\, the English Lake District: townscapes\, landscapes (as long as there ’s a building of some sort!)\, walls\, hamlets\, villages\, ports and ha rbours as his main subjects. He's always looking for a different viewpoint of familiar places – a dynamic angle\, with strong light and shade\, wh ich helps the drawing come alive.\n\nJohn was a participant in 2017's Sky Arts Landscape Artists of the Year competition and undertakes commissions for large corporate clients and private individuals.\n\nHe appeared on 202 2 edition of Watercolour Challenge on Channel 5 -available to re watch on  My5 -Channel Five's on demand catch up.\n\nJohn's first commissioned boo k 'Pen and Wash' was published in 2024\, and is available from him directl y\, or ofromvarious online retailers...Amazon\, Waterstones \, Blackwells\ , as well so directly from the publishers-Crowood Press\nMaterials Provide d\nCalder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:\n\n 1 x Table Top Easel\n 1 x MDF Board in various sizes\n 1 x Paint Pot\n 1 x Palette or Plate\n Limited sundry products are also available if you forget anything.\n\nMaterials to Bring\n\n A sketchbook: any shape\, size \,\n Quality drawing tools: pens\, pencils\, twigs dipped in ink\, Paints : whatever medium you want - John will be demonstrating his line and wash style\, which utilises waterproof ink pens\, and watercolour paint.Brushes : whatever size you have\, larger brushes(size 8 and above) will be best f or loose expressive washes.\n Paper: Good quality watercolour paper in lo ose sheets\, pads or blocks. John’s favoured brand is Saunders Waterford 300g rough in a quarter imperial size (approx. 15” x 11”) but any equ ivalent good quality paper will do. The paper we choose to paint on is the foundation of our work—and like a house\, a good foundation is critical for the success of a painting: good quality paper is of great importance\ , especially for the beginner who is learning.\n All materials are availa ble online at www.calderartsupplies.co.uk.
