SUMMARY:Dynamic light and shade in pen and wash: a workshop at Calder Graph
 ics\, Huddersfield
DESCRIPTION:John will complete a demonstration piece in two stages\, in whi
ch he will show how line and wash can be not just colouring in... a critic
ism often levelled at this style. Depending on the speed at which you comp
lete your version of the demonstration image\, there will also be the oppo
rtunity to complete a second\, working from your choice. from a selection
of reference photographs supplied. The theme of the day will be 'dynamic l
ight and shadows' with plenty of suggestions as to how to successfully cho
ose a focal point and structure your painting in such a way as to direct t
he viewer's eye\, and how not to be afraid of using white space in your co
 mpositions.\nAbout the Artist\nJohn Harrison - Yorkshire born and bred - a
nd proud of it.\n\nJohn produces drawings and then adds colour in watercol
our washes\, not too dissimilar to a traditional painter. He will often st
art with a pencil drawing\, add watercolour washes and then add ink lines
over the top\, but he usually starts with a line drawing in ink\, or more
often\, a sketch.\n\nHe is an active Urban Sketcher - meeting up with othe
r artists at a wide variety of locations to ‘show the world\, one drawin
g at a time’ (a direct quote from the Urban Sketchers’ website).\n\nTh
e inspiration for much of his work is to be found within Yorkshire’s bor
ders\, and running a close second\, the English Lake District: townscapes\
, landscapes (as long as there’s a building of some sort!)\, walls\, ham
lets\, villages\, ports and harbours as his main subjects. He's always loo
king for a different viewpoint of familiar places – a dynamic angle\, wi
th strong light and shade\, which helps the drawing come alive.\n\nJohn wa
s a participant in 2017's Sky Arts Landscape Artists of the Year competiti
on and undertakes commissions for large corporate clients and private indi
viduals.\n\nHe appeared on 2022 edition of Watercolour Challenge on Channe
l 5 -avaiable to re watch on catch up My5.\n\nJohn's first commissioned bo
ok 'Pen and Wash' was published in 2024\, and is available from him direct
