commissions

If you are interested in a portrait of your home(or someone else’s) then please read on….it’s a much simpler process than you might think. A line and watercolour portrait of your home makes a truly unique gift, whether it’s a present for someone moving in or out, for children leaving home or even as a birthday, anniversary or wedding present.

It doesn’t have to be your home…. A line and watercolour portrait is a wonderful way to create a lasting memory of anywhere special to you or your family:  not just your family home, what about the church in which you were married ,that special weekend break, the lovely holiday cottage…….in fact, anywhere with a special place in your life?

My signature style is a strong line drawing with selected watercolour washes  used to focus and highlight features of your home: it’s a contemporary style that is very popular, although I can also use a more traditional style of a fully coloured illustration…more than happy to work with you so you get a portrait you’re completely pleased with.

How it works:

Once you’ve decided to take the plunge, you can send me a selection of photographs to work from – either actual prints, or by email. Do choose a favourite view and remember that houses look much more attractive on a sunny day, and that the property looks its best in the early evening, when shadows can add dramatic atmosphere and details such as stone work or an opened window or gate can add life to the property.  Trees and hedges are very useful in masking adjoining houses or buildings so please include a shot with any such greenery, hedges or stone walls.
Please make notes of anything you don’t want included: the washing line, satellite dish, telephone wire, or that rusty old gate for example- although you may want to feature this in its own right as an added ‘character’ view.

Allow at least 2 to 3 weeks for completion of your portrait depending on how many ‘works in progress’ I have.
If your commission is for a gift or a specific date, please let me know and I’ll do my utmost to finish it at shorter notice

So, how much will it cost? Depending on the final style and amount of detail, pen and ink line drawings start at £120, line and watercolour paintings from £150. All illustrations are supplied in a neutral coloured mount, or unmounted ready for you to choose a frame to suit your decor. The usual size of a portrait is around 12” by 10” in a mount sized 16″ x 12″ inches: this size has been cunningly chosen, as off the shelf frames in this size are widely available so you will have no major problems choosing one to suit the decor.   I’m happy to work to any size you may need though – just ask…my largest commission to date was 110 x 70 cm.

If you’re within a reasonable distance from me, then I will deliver the finished article personally, otherwise, I will use a secure overnight courier to get it to you safely, at a nominal charge.

  1. Hello John
I am attending one of your workshops and wonder if I could bring a portrait, rather than a landscape, to do in line & wash? I am really looking forward to learning ‘line & wash’ technique. I will bring pictures of ‘views’ in case ‘portrait’ is not convenient or acceptable to you.
    Sincerely
    M Carr

    1. Hello Myrna… thanks for writing-of course -bring whatever you feel comfortable doing…I will have plenty of other references but no portraits as it’s not something I am qualified to teach. I will be able to show you my method of line and wash, but I’m not sure how it will translate to a portrait: it will be interesting to see though.
Which workshop are you booked on?
      John
