Line and wash workshops for 2022

This list is correct at the time of writing( December 1 2021), but there are several venues and dates in discussion, and I’ll update these as they are confirmed, so please keep checking the list.

Where the workshop is being hosted by a venue rather than an art club or society, you will need to book directly with the organiser, and you will find these details at the end of this list. Where the workshop is run by a club, many of whom welcome visitors to their events, please  contact me for more information.

ART CLUBS/SOCIETIES:

I absolutely love giving demonstrations to, and running workshops for, art clubs, groups, societies and art venues – please contact me directly to make an enquiry or a booking. My area of expertise is that of line and wash, with a strong emphasis on drawing, and using selective watercolour washes, with a distinctive end result -not your traditional watercolour painting. I have recently upgraded my video camera/projector set up to a HD version, after seeing just how much it improves visibility and enjoyment.

A demonstration is  just that: a pure demonstration  in front of your members, using my camera /projection equipment, and is usually 2 hours in duration, and can be any time of day or evening to suit your club’s timetable.

The workshop format is usually a full day, usually from around 10 am to 4pm, with a lunch break- the format follows, loosely: an initial introduction to my techniques and styles, followed by a simple exercise in drawing, handling the pen, and working with loose wet-in-wet washes, then after lunch, involves your members in recreating a subject in ‘my’ style of pen and wash with the aim of everyone going home with a finished painting .Both are informal, relaxed and easy going, and I supply all necessary background material for your members.

These are just a guide…I am extremely flexible, so if you’re looking for a specific topic or theme, I’m always willing to accommodate these-just ask. Based in central West Yorkshire, I can travel easily to most places: anywhere within an hour’s drive will incur no extra charge – if your location is significantly over that, we can negotiate (reasonable) travel costs.

Here are some comments from recent workshops, and a newspaper clipping review from a recent demo for Keswick Art Society:

  • You made us feel at ease and not at all out of our depth.

  • “I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your tuition and have talked about nothing else since we left your class”

  • “Thank you so much for the workshop- it was both an informal yet informative day. You are a very supportive and approachable teacher –  qualities not all instructors have! “

  • “I really enjoyed your workshop which I found very inspiring.”

  • “I learnt a lot and really enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere”

  • ” your enthusiasm is infectious”

  • “I do hope we can ask you back again next year.”

  1. I have formed a new small Art Group at St Pauls Church in Harrogate. I have also just joined the SAA. There are only 12 of us so far and we are all using different mediums.
Many are still learning to sketch. I am looking for any artists interested in teaching about sketching outdoors as many of the group members don’t feel experienced enough to try this yet. I love sketching outdoors.
Also for possible artists to give demonstrations/work shops.
We meet on alternate Tuesday mornings for 3 hours at a time.

If you can help and would like to give me an idea of how much you charge, please let me know.

    1. Hello Janet
Thanks for looking at my stuff. I’m in the process of setting up a Yiutube channel, which I’ll start to populate with some basic videos-I’ll start with a couple of my existing sketchbook tours, then move onto quick demonstrations of my techniques.
I’ll write a post on my site once it starts, so if you subscribe to updates, you’ll get a notification.
      Best wishes

  6. Hi John
I live in Keld, and I am interested in potentially arranging a course based on Keld in our resource centre. Could you let me know how much you charge for a days course, do you provide all material or do your students need to bring their equipment, what is your maximum amount of people you can teach and what is your availability if we did want to arrange a course?
    Sorry so many questions.

    Kind Regards
    Jacqui

  7. Hi John
I am very impressed with your line and wash drawings and I would love to attend one of your demo’s, unfortunately I live near Ross on Wye in Herefordshire so I guess it’s unlikely you will be demoing near me. If you do do any within a hours drive of Ross could you please let me know.

    Stay safe

    Best wishes

  8. Hi John

I am a keen follower of yours, and especially like to see your Lotherton Hall pieces; Lotherton is a favourite haunt of mine. I attend a weekly art class in Leeds 17, in a large, bright and airy hall. There are around 12 members in the group. Please could you let me know how much you charge for your 2 hour demonstration, location being in our class’ Leeds 17 hall.

    Thanks
    Linda
